309S and 310S High Temperature Stainless Steel

For industries operating in the fiery heart of high temperature  stainless steel processes—from furnace linings to aerospace exhaust systems—309S and 310S austenitic stainless steels stand as engineering marvels. These alloys defy thermal extremes while resisting corrosion, making them indispensable where ordinary metals fail. Let’s dive into what makes them exceptional and where they excel.

The difference between 309S and 310S stainless steel:

309S and 310S stainless steels are commonly used products in various industries around the world.

309S Stainless Steel An austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel that provides excellent corrosion and heat resistance for many critical applications, 309S stainless steel is high in chromium and low in nickel, and can be used in atmospheres with the highest sulfur content, heat resistant temperature 1000 degrees.

310S stainless steel austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel with excellent oxidation and oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance. Due to the high content of chromium and nickel, the strength is much better, it can work continuously at high temperature, and has good high temperature resistance. It also has good oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, acid and alkali resistance, high temperature resistance and other characteristics. 310S stainless steel is specially used to make furnace tubes. Austenitic stainless steel has added carbon content, which increases strength due to solid solution strengthening, so it has high strength at high temperature. The melting point starts to soften at 1470°C, and the allowable stress continues to decrease at 800°C.

309S and 310S High  Temperature Stainless Steel Application Difference:

309S stainless steel is used in:

Blast furnaces, fluidized bed furnaces, paper mill equipment, catalyst recovery systems and recovery units, pulverized coal burners and tube racks, annealing covers and boxes, incinerators, rotary kilns and calciners.

309s stainless steel application, 309s high temperature stainless steel

310S stainless steel is used in:

Fluidized Bed Coal Burners, Radiant Welded Tubes, Tube Hangers for Oil Refining and Steam Boilers, Gas Generator Internals, Thermowells and Refractory Components, Burners, Combustion Chambers, Retorts, Muffles, Annealing Covers, Cryogenic Structures .

310s stainless steel application, 310s high temperature stainless steel

The above is the difference between 309S and 310S stainless steel.

Industry Applications: Where These Alloys Dominate

1. Industrial Furnaces & Heat Treatment Equipment

  • 310S forms radiant tubes, burner nozzles, and conveyor belts in furnaces (≤1200°C), thanks to its unmatched creep strength. It outperforms 253MA in cyclic heating environments.

  • 309S excels in heat exchangers and boiler components (<1000°C), resisting sulfur-rich atmospheres in petrochemical plants.

2. Energy & Chemical Processing

Both alloys handle corrosive media like hot acids, ammonia, and sulfides:

  • 310S linings in flue gas stacks resist acidic condensation in power plants.

  • 309S pipes transport hot citric/acetic acid in food processing and molten salts in solar thermal plants.

3. Automotive & Aerospace

  • Exhaust manifolds and turbocharger housings (309S) endure cyclic heating in engines.

  • Jet engine combustors and afterburners (310S) leverage its 1150°C stability.

4. Waste Incineration & Pollution Control

  • 310S’s oxidation resistance makes it ideal for kiln internals, scrubbers, and catalytic converter housings facing aggressive combustion by products.

For your high-temperature stainless steel needs, 309S and 310S are unmatched choices, combining strength, corrosion resistance, and economy. Whether you’re building furnaces, boilers, or chemical processing equipment, these grades deliver reliable, long-term performance even under the toughest conditions.
